Questions

The next afternoon I had LAX practice and it went great. I loved being on the field just running (like a normal girl) and passing the ball back and forth doing drills with Marie, Christa, and Lori. Of course, Wendi and Patti were helping Coach Blue. Okay, even when I was having fun being just plain normal me, Wendi was there to take control.

“Lia’s not running fast enough,” I heard Wendi tell Coach Blue.

“I believe she’s sweating too much,” Patti offered.

Coach Blue looked at them. “Ladies, why don’t you concentrate on your own games and form? As far as I am concerned, there is no such thing as too much sweat. Plus, even you two have to admit, Lia is a team player.”

“Well she is ON the team,” Patti conceded.

Coach sighed. He looked at his clipboard. “She’s third place in goal scoring after Lori and you, Wendi. And she and Marie are tied for first place in assists.”

At times like this, having super hearing came in so handy. I smiled knowing the coach appreciated me. I had long ago come to the conclusion that Wendi would never like or accept me. I guess some people just don’t “click” no matter how hard one of those people tries. Truthfully, I gave up wasting energy on trying to make Wendi like me long ago. I liked me and that’s what was important. Wendi and I had reached a level where we could tolerate each other. I had come to believe that we would have to leave it at that. I can’t make EVERYBODY like me unless I use my mind control powers, and that would be so wrong. (Fun. But wrong!)

MAC started to vibrate on my arm. Looking down at him, I saw a text alert from Jason.

JASON> Lia, Hana is testifying now, you should get to the courthouse.

Honestly, I had no interest in watching my dad’s android girlfriend try to convince a court of law that she and my dad should get married. Sure, it’d be fine (I guess) if they could get married. But it’d be just as fine if they couldn’t. Heck, they could still be together. They didn’t really need a piece of paper to tell them that.

I caught a pass from Christie and raced down the field. I flicked my hand sending the ball to Lori.

My wrist vibrated again.

Glancing down, I saw another text from Jason.

JASON> Lia, PLEASE!

JASON> Get here!!

Marie and Lori ran over to me.

“Jason is texting us!” Lori said. “He says you really need to get to the courthouse.” She looked me in the eyes and sighed. “He’s being really annoying. I hate it when people interrupt practice.”

“Jason knows the importance of practicing and he loves LAX as much as we do. If he’s asking you to show up it MUST be important,” Marie said.

I lowered my stick and ran over to Coach. This wouldn’t be easy, especially after what Wendi and Patti had been saying. But being a hero means you have to do the hard stuff.
